The Biking Andalucia Sierra Nevada Summer high altitude Summer programme has been a success that has exceeded our expectations (and most of our guests!).
Unique to Biking Andalucia, this is a real mountain bike journey that is as varied and demanding as it is beautiful. It is far removed from the tame supposedly “across Sierra Nevada” biking holidays of some of the larger and considerably more expensive operators. We take in Pico Veleta and Mulhacen at 3392 and 3498 metres respectively, the highest peaks of the Iberian Peninsula. We are so high that there are areas of snow during all of summer despite being in southern Spain. We ride through a pristine alpine landscape populated by ibex.
Our adventure starts at the village of Capileira at 1450 metres, where we commence a high mountain climb to “Mirador De Trevelez” at 2800 metres before descending to the spectacular and comfortable Poqueira Refugio at 2500 metres for the night. It is difficult to imagine a more spectacular place to spend the night!
Next day we climb to Pico Veleta. Breathtaking views and the summer melt waters will accompany us as they pour down waterfalls and streams into turquoise and emerald lakes. On long climbs and sweeping descents looking out to the Mediterranean, you will have the chance to explore the Sierra Nevada National Park with all its flora and fauna changing visibly according to altitude, from forests and herds of Hispanic mountain goat to butterflies and rare flowers; Sierra Nevada is home to more than 100 endemic species.
We return to the Poqueira Refugio at 2500 metres for a second night. The following day we climb Mulhacen, our route continues by way of a challenging cocktail of wicked singletrack, high mountain climbs and jeep tracks. The return is an adrenalin-filled descent of 3100 metres over 40 kilometres to Orgiva.
This must count as one of the ultimate (and affordable) biking adventures anywhere. See here for details of the Summer 2014 programme.
